Wickford Art Association
By Robin Wiseman, Rhode Island School of Design
John Berberian's pencil drawing has the kind of punch, clarity, and intensity of scene that is reminiscent of Norman Rockwell's use of technical mastery in the pursuit of vivid realism. A lot of pencil drawings can seem washed out or insubstantial, but John has found resonant deep darks that are lovely to look at. I also appreciate his sense of when to leave out an edge (the lost information, or obscuro"). Because he leaves some details unrendered, the image states itself in an open, inviting way.

Mastery of graphite along with the dark, almost solid results of charcoal Good composition Sketchy lines comprising/representing endless time. Eyes beautifully crafted with refelction of shadow and light.
